A Day of Ice Skating

This story was submitted by Jeffrey Davidson, a True North member serving at Valley Youth Center in his second year. Jeffrey introduced a few kids from his site to the wonderful sport of ice skating; a Minnesota classic! These first time moments with kids really stick with them for the rest of their lives. Nice work Jeffrey, way to teach these kids an awesome new thing!

My great story involves more than one child. We take a group of kids ice skating at the Heritage Center every Wednesday. I had three or four kids that have never been skating before. When they first got on the ice they used a chair to hold on to help them balance as they skated around the rink. As the day went on I went around and helped each kid get more and more used to balancing without using the chair. Well needless to say, by the end of the night each kid was skating by themselves without using any assistance.. They were so proud of their accomplishment, and had so much fun, they wanted to come skating every time we go so they could keep practicing and get better. I was extremely happy that I got these kids outside there comfort zone and try something new, and they loved it.
