Getting Ready to Plant

Laura, our True North member at the Little Y, has the youth at her site getting ready to revamp the community garden! As part of their Global Youth Service Day project, the kids have been busy planning out what vegetables they want to plant this year, taking down the old fence to build a new sturdier one, and starting to plant herbs in egg shell cartons.

The Little Y was the site that I served at last year and the kids loved having the garden. It was really cool to see them take ownership of the work involved in caring for it, from planting the veggies, to watering, to harvesting. And of course the best part of it all was when the had the opportunity to eat what they grew! I am so happy to hear they are excited to do the garden again this year. Not only does it give them healthy snacks but also teaches responsibility, team work, and dedication.

Hope its a good harvest year!
