Our AmeriCorps members are facilitating service projects with the youth at their sites throughout the month in celebration of Global Youth Service Day. These projects range from visiting the elderly in nursing homes to raising money for the local humane society, to neighborhood garbage clean-ups.
Nico is our AmeriCorps member serving with K.E.Y. Zone Outdoors, and the rainy weather yesterday did not put a damper on his project with the enthusiastic bunch of kids at Homecroft Elementary. The goal of his project is to plant Minnesota native seeds to contribute to the spread of more native plants in the Duluth area through the pollination process. He gave each kid a shell of an egg carton to decorate and plant a native seed. The kids will be replanting these seeds in the yards or woods at their home when the ground is ready. Nico will also be facilitating this project at the other K.E.Y. Zone Outdoor sites: Congdon Elementary, Piedmont Elementary, and Myers-Wilkins Elementary.
The kids had a wonderful time planting their seeds, coloring earth day posters, and playing indoor active gym games while the weather cleared. Facilitating activities that instill environmental connection in the minds of our youth is of critical importance, and that is one of the main objectives of the service of our AmeriCorps members. Thank you Nico for putting this project together and teaching these kids about the importance of planting native seeds in Minnesota. You have created an opportunity for the youth at K.E.Y. Zone Outdoors- Homecroft to make a difference in the Duluth community!
