Serving with AmeriCorps is a special way to support your community. One that is selfless and requires one to think of others and live modestly. Most individuals who choose to serve fulfill their contract and move on to other things. It takes a dedicated individual to sign on for an a second term, a truly special person to sign up for a third, and a heart of gold to complete the maximum of four terms of service. True North AmeriCorps would like to extend a special thank you to Helen Davis, for her completion of four terms of AmeriCorps service.
Helen’s service site, the Family Freedom Center, seeks to empower the Black community by reconstructing socio-cultural narratives and unapologetically embracing what it means to be Black. As a vital part of this organization, Ms Helen helped create inclusive spaces for kids, families, and elders to engage, educate, and be empowered. Her dedication to others is unparalleled. After the untimely passing of FFC’s founder, Xavier Bell, Helen was a source of strength for the community. She persisted, being there for others even when she was deeply impacted by the loss.
A few months later, the COVID-19 pandemic changed the world as we knew it. Helen stepped up, going above and beyond to meet her FFC families needs – organizing care package drop offs, supporting emergency childcare, making sure people had access to food, coordinating transportation for elders to get to appointments, being a lifeline to so many. Even when given the opportunity, she never ceased spending her time helping others. Helen has touched countless lives with her compassion and dedication.
Just think what the world could be like if we were all a little bit more like Helen..
